Reframing Perspectives

The first Asia Pacific Coaching Conference occured this week in Singapore. I was a speaker at the conference.  Around 90 of us got together in one of the sessions to discuss reframing perspectives. It was great fun to talk to so many coaches and people using a coach approach. We discussed a number of tools to use to see other perspectives. I said I would post here to continue our conversation. So to get us started I am going to list several coaching questions that the trainers use at ICA to support their clients and the students, in seeing another perspective. Over the next 10 days I will list all these questions, one trainer's questions every day. So please jump in and add your favourite questions or comment on the questions listed here and how you might use them. Also please continue the conversation about reframing perspectives and how you have been using the tools to see another perspective.

So the first trainer to get us started is Jamee Tenzer with her favourite questions. Read more »

ICA in Singapore

ICA had a get together for the first time in Singapore this week. Over 30 students, graduates, people interesting in becoming a coach and friends had fun getting to know each other. ICA Learning Leader, Felicia Lauw, front row far right, organised the event. Felicia is the assessor and a Learning Leader for ICA's chinese coach training program. It is the only ICF accredited chinese program in the world. ICA CEO Bronwyn Bowery-Ireland is 4th in from the right, back row, wearing glasses. Everyone had a great night in Singapore.

Some ICA Staff, Students, Graduates and friends got together during the Asia Pacific Coaching Conference 2010.

Teacher's Day in Singapore

I have just arrived in Singapore to speak at the Asia Pacific Coaching Conference and as I sat down to read the paper noticed that today in Singapore is Teacher's Day. Many children had written into the paper explaining about their teacher and how much they appreciated them. The entire country is acknowledging the work and commitment teachers make to education, the children and the overall country. It was so beautiful to read.

I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the teachers, trainers, learning leaders at ICA for the amazing outstanding contribution they make. Through their work they make a difference everyday throughout the world. Deciding to be dedicated to learning is one of the most amazing choices a person can make.

So to the pursuit of learning and to the people who lead and support us in this pursuit, a huge THANK YOU!

And to all leaders of learning around the world a huge thankyou to you too!

Please post your acknowledgement to a learning leader that impacted your life. It is time to celebrate and recognise the impact they have made.

Catalyst for Change

I was having a conversation recently with a highly experienced person in Human Resources. We talked about management training and leadership training and how many of the programs in this area are based around looking at how staff need to be managed and trying to work out how to make them more effective. Many programs include a range of models that managers can use to support them in this process.

We both discussed how we believe that the focus of these training programs needs to change. Instead of looking at how to change others, the focus needs to be on knowing more about self and what you want to change about yourself. This is the only thing that we have control over. Yet the focus has often been around changing the people around us. This must change, as if we focus on changing others, then we never look within and never looking within means nothing changes. Can you repeat that please? by Jamee Tenzer

I’m sorry, can you repeat that please?

Okay coaches, you know we all have our “moments.” We get distracted and we lose track of what is going on in a session with a client. Our attention may be pulled away by an external element; the whirring of the garbage truck outside or a young child who just cannot wait for her answer. Or, it may be an internal fork in the road. There we are, going along very nicely; coaching, listening and questioning, and using all of our marvelous skill sets. When all of a sudden, we find that our brain has taken a slight turn and we are now lost in our thoughts. Instead of giving feedback to our client, we are wondering; what will we have for dinner and did I remember to mail the rent check? Read more »

Too Young to Coach, by Michael Moniz

While I first started my coaching practice many years ago, I was attending a networking event where I mentioned I was a life coach to a group of people. One of the ladies in the group turned to me and asked, "Aren't you too young to coach?"

Of course I was flattered but also taken back. My mind raced with this thought that I was too young to coach. As I questioned myself on this statement, I realized we are all too something in life, aren't we? I could be seen as too young by this lady but I could be seen as too old by another. I realized my life is full of these statements being thrown around.  Read more »

The Choices We Make by Bronwyn Bowery-Ireland

I was recently part of a conversation around coaching. I was having a business lunch and we were discussing coaching, how it is being used and taught. It became very apparent to me that what we were actually discussing was mentoring and consulting, not coaching. I brought this to everyone’s attention and they were quite surprised. They had been using the term coaching as some sort of interchangeable word for mentoring, facilitating and even consulting.

I began to talk about how coaching is very different from mentoring and most definitely different from consulting. Both of these services are guided and directed by the knowledge of the expert, the mentor or the consultant. Read more »

Coaching Reflections by Sheri Boone

We were having a great conversation the other day in a Supervised Coach class around the question: "do I need to know my clients' topic prior to a coaching session?" Sometimes clients may send along an email advising their coach about what they want coaching on. Some coaches send out a pre-coaching form asking for this as well. Or, we may not be aware of the topic until we get on the phone. Read more »
